I couldn't make it to the presentations today because of a personal important matter I had to take care of.
The story of Ping by Marjorie Flack. This is such a cute little story. It's about a duck that lived with a fisherman and everymorning he and his family would go to work on the Yangtze river. They would have to catch fish and smails. They would work all day and at the end of the day the last duck inup the ramp into the boat would get a whack on their bottom to remember they need to hurry up. So ping would always try to hurry so he didn't get a whack.
Hello Bisquit by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. This book is about a little girl who got a new puppy and didn't know what to name him. She writes all kinds of names on her chalk board and still doesn't know. The puppy ends up getting into the dog bisquits and she calls him Bisquit.

I enjoyed the presentation. The first one was sad about slavery and what happened to the little boy. The group was well prepared and did a good job, I also enjoyed the glazed donuts. The presentation on Snow White was interesting seeing all the different pictures of Snow White and how different people percieve her. The apple that we got tied in well to their presentation.
Bedtime For Frances by Russell Hoban. This cute story is about a badger that won't go to bed after her mother and father tucked her into bed already. She keeps making excuses not to go to bed. First she's thirsty then she's hungry, then she's afraid of the dark. After they tuck her in again, she goes and wakes up her dad and talks to him, he tells her everything is ok and go back to bed. She finally drifts off the sleep.
Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel. These are small stories in a little chapter book. Each story is comical. One story is where toad had a list of things to do and the wind blows his list away. He didn't know what to do anymore and his friend frog said to make up a new one. As the day progressed, toad would write down things he did. At the end of the day he wrote 'go to sleep'.

ch 10 and 11. Reading aloud is great because it opens up the childrens imagination. Kids can hear the written words dramatically to improve their inner ear, so that as they turn to their own silent reading , they will model the expression you used. That makes sense to me! It's important to know what we want to read to our students and why. A good text for guided reading should support children's use of the skills and strategies they know and can use easily.
Follow me Mittens by Lola M. Schaefer. This book is about Mittens and Nick going for a walk. They go past trees and over logs and then Mitten watches a butterly and gets carried away with chasing it. The little girl put the sweater on Harry and it fit perfect, the only problem is that Harry didn't like the sweater. He tried to loose the sweater but it kept being returned to him, his owner realizes he doesn't like it and gives it to a bird for her nest, it's a cute comical story.
The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff. Babar and his mother was walking along when someone shot his mother and killed her. Babar went to live a lady in the city. He gets dressed up with fancy clothes, goes to fine dinners and walks in the city park with his new friend. ch. 9 Nonfiction is my favorite type of literature. I like fantasy but am a realist. It's seems I can understand it better because it makes sense to me. Accuracy is one of the most importand elements of a nonfiction book. A nonfiction book needs to be clear, with a cohesive text.
Love of Bubbles by Steven Banks. This is a cute colorful book about SpongeBob. He was out bubble blowing one morning when suddenly he tripped over some kelp, bumped his head and blacked out, when he awoke he could remember anything. His friends Patrick and Sandy help him out until he regains his memory.
Stink and the Worlds Worst Super-Stinky Sneakers by Megan McDonald. When Stink goes to the Everybody Stinks exhibit at the science museum, he discovers that his nose has amazing sniffing abilities. Before long he's engrossed in toilet water, corpse flowers and all smelly things.

ch 8 and 14. Fiction does not mean a story is fake or untrue, rather, it can illuminate truth making what we percieve as reality. There are several types of fiction used with children: contemporary realistic fiction,, historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. I love fiction. One of my favorite movies is the wizard of oz.
The Puppy Place by Ellen Miles. Lizzie and Charles Peterson can't wait to get a puppy but until then they foster dogs to find them perfect homes. A dog named Skipper and three new puppies arrive at the local dog shelter and lizzie and Charles think they can take care of them. It ends up being a challange.
Socks by Beverly Cleary. This chapter book is a hilarios portrait of life with a baby from a cat's point of view. The cat lives with a young couple called the Brickers who play with him, pet him, feed him treats and always has time for him until a new baby enters the picture.

Ch. 7 Picture books are a combination of literature and fine arts into a unique literary form. Even books writen for young children are expected to be well written. Age is taken into account but the writing is not simplistic, choppy or condescending to children. Hide and seek is one of my favorite books, it's a simple picture book with bears playing hide and seek.
Hide and seek by Susanna Gretz. This adorable picture book is about little bears playing hide and seek, trying to find louise. They can't find her anywher! She hides in a book shelf behind some books, she hides in a bathtub and is smothered by clothes, she hides in a trash can and is not very happy, she gets irritated and goes to bed. They finally find her sleeping comfortably.
10 Fat Turkeys is a comedy picture book by Tony Johnston. This funny story is about 10 turkeys sitting in a tree all playing around. One by one each turkey falls off. At the end of the story all the turkeys are off the tree and need a ladder to climb back up again.

ch 14. There's different types of genres including contemporary fiction, poetry and traditional literature. And picture books cut across all genres including nonfiction, fiction, fantasy, biography and poetry so it's a good idea to share examples of fine children's books to teach about writing different genres and how to use literary devices.
Marley A Dog Like No Other by John Grogan. This book is about a couple that adopts a white lab. ch. 5. Poetry is musical language. Poetry is categorized in several ways: by author, type of collection, literary device used, theme, etc... It's good to have a room of poetry to build interest in the children. Poetry can be about sports, which my son would like, humorous, family life, animals and many others.

He runs with her as she finds eggs and the book is a touch and feel book, you can feel the grass, the eggs, the little chick, the butterfly and the rabbit. It's a great book for little one's to explore.

ch. 3. Comprehension means understanding what we read and it's the role of the teacher to enable and support comprehension. We need to have reading material that interests the kids and that they can relate to. Scaffolding is a good idea...that we use questions, models, feedback, and instruction and gradually withdraw and let the children become more independant. There are different types of reading. Aesthetic reading is reading for fun. Efferent reading is reading because they have to, like reading a textbook. It requires more work and one may have to slow down and even reread to get the message. We can use schema when we read a book and apply our prior knowledge so we can relate to a book better.

Ch. 2. Educators need to be considerate of cultural diversity. There are so many different nationalities and religions. Cultural mismatch in the culture of the school is unfortunate. So if the students culture matches the school then they're more likely to succeed and if a students culture doesn't match the culture of the school then they feel uncomfortable and can be labeled as having a learning disability. I believe we need to face the challanges of culturally responsive schooling rather than have students fall through the cracks or drop out. We need to encourage cultural diverse students and let them know that their language and culture are good and important. I like what the book says about one of the best ways for us all to learn about each other is through books that challange us to become different and more experienced in our knowledge and our views.

I enjoyed working on the flags with my group and representing our cultures about teaching. The culture in the classroom should respect all students in the class.
Dr. Suess is my favorite children's author. My favorite book written by him is Green Eggs and Ham. It's about two things. One likes green eggs and ham and the other one insists that he doesn't. Finally at the end he realizes he loves green eggs and ham. Instead of saying he doesn't like them without trying them, he finally tried them and loved them. dir.yahoo.com/.../Children_s/Dr._Suess_Theodore_Geisel_1904_1991.
Charlie and the chocolate factory was written by Roald Dahl. The story is about a poor boy whose family doesn't have much money. There are gold tickets given out in some chocolate bars and the winners get to go to the candy factory. Charlie buys a couple of bars and doesn't win. He finally buys a winning chocolate bar and gets to go to the factory along with other children. He ends up winning the whole factory. www.en.wikipedia.org.

Ch.1 I believe it's important to me to instill on my students the importance of reading and not only that but to love reading. I want to help my students develop good reading attitudes. I also want them to use their imagination and discuss a book they've read w/the class. I want to have fun with reading and create a lasting memory that reading important.
Childrens Literature Authors... I never realized how old the story of the Ugly Duckling is, it dates back to the 1950's. The story was written by Hans Christopher. It's about an egg that gets lost and is found by a mother duck. When the duck is born everyone teases him and calls him ugly. The duck was actually a beautiful goose and everyone finds that out when he grows up.
Betsy Byars wrote the Summer of the Swans. In 1971 it won the Newberry Medal. The story is about a 14 year old girl that lives with her aunt and is in search of her mentally retarded brother. They lost their mom six years ago.
John Cotton wrote a short catechism called Milk for Babes, which was considered the first childrens book by an American. The book consisted of 64 questions and answers and was written for children and young Christians. It's about sin, the 10 commandments, the role of the church, nature of grace, the covenent, salvation...and other Biblical teachings.
